This research aims to analyze the errors made by class X students at SMAN 3

errors using Brown mathematical categories which define 4 types of errors:
omission, addition, substitution, and ordering. The data results revealed 4 types of
student’s writing errors: 1) omissions (19,23%); 2) addition (30,76%); 3)
Substitution (34,61%); and 4) ordering (15,38%). The most common students'
narrative text errors were substitution namely 18 (34,61%). The research results
showed that student’s had difficulty writing tests and translating words, some lack
vocabulary, structured text, and making arguments. It can be concluded that

that students need more practical writing assignments and learn basic English
grammar from English books, journals, and articles to improve their skills in
