Abstract

ABSTRACT
Rahmawati, 2023 “The Use of The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC)
Learning English In Improving Student's Listening Skills At The
Eleventh Grade of SMAN 4 Palopo.” Supervised by the first
consultant Dewi Furwana and the second consultant St. Hartina.
This research aims to determine the BBC Learning English Channel on YouTube

-grade students at SMAN 4 Palopo. This
research used a pre-experimental design (one group Pre-test and Post-test design).
One group was used in this design for the pre-test (O1), treatment (X), and posttest (O2). This research instrument was a listening test and questionnaire, and the
data were analyzed quantitatively with SPSS 22. After applying the treatment, the
researcher gained the data that the mean score in the Pre-test was 53.00 with a
standard deviation of 12,607 and a standard error mean of 2,819. Meanwhile, the
mean score in the Post-test is 83.50, with a standard deviation of 17,252 and a
standard error mean of 3,858. The value of df = 19 at a significant level of 5% is
obtained from t-table = 3,579. Based on the results of the table analysis,
5.977>3,579 and sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000<0.005, then (Ho)is rejected, and (Ha) is
accepted. So, it can be concluded that using the BBC English Learning Channel
affects students' listening skills. From the questionnaire results, the researcher
found that 56% of respondents strongly agreed with the statement categorized as
high. Next, there are 38% agree with the statement categorized as low, and 6% of
respondents disagree with the statement. It means that 94% of students strongly
agree and agree that the use of BBC Learning English Channel positively
contributes to their listening skills.
