DEVELOPING ENGLISH CAMP HANDBOOK FOR STUDENTS AT MUHAMMADIYAH BOARDING SCHOOL PALOPO

This research was motivated by the lack of effective and engaging English learning materials used during the English Camp at Muhammadiyah Boarding School Palopo. The primary issue identified was the ineffectiveness of handouts and worksheets, which were difficult to use and lacked clear structure. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop an appropriate English Camp handbook that supports English language learning particularly speaking skills and vocabulary acquisition while integrating Islamic values to reflect the institution's identity. The
research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the 4-D model (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate) proposed by Thiagarajan, Semmel, and Semmel. The study was conducted at Muhammadiyah Boarding School Palopo from June 20 to 22, 2024, involving 15 student participants in the
English Camp program. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, field observations, and expert validation. The instruments were designed to assess
students’ needs and evaluate the quality of the developed handbook. Data analysis combined qualitative (descriptive) and quantitative methods to evaluate responses and validation scores. The final product was a handbook comprising five units,
including vocabulary enrichment, expressions, core materials, and interactive tasks. Expert validation indicated a high level of feasibility with an average score of 97%. Student responses during the dissemination phase were highly positive, indicating
that the handbook was engaging, well-structured, and effective in improving their English proficiency. Thus, the product is considered suitable for implementation in future English Camp programs. Keywords: English Camp, Handbook Development, Speaking Skills, 4-D Model
