Abstract

Dila Sandi, 2022. "An Analysis of Second Grade Students' Speaking Anxiety in
SMA Negeri 2 Palopo". Thesis. English Language Education
Study Program in the State Islamic Studies Palopo Supervised
by Jufriadi and Magfirah Thayyib.
This research aimed to find out the factors that cause anxiety in speaking English
of second-grade students IPA 6 SMAN 2 Palopo and how students cope with their
anxiety. This research used qualitative methods and the research instruments were
questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaire used in the study was adapted
from Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) designed by Horwitz.
This result of the research showed that the factors that cause students' anxiety in
speaking English included a lack of self-confidence, worry about mistakes in
English class, lack of self-preparation to speak English, fear of negative
responses, and poor English skills. In addition, the results of the study show
several ways for students to overcome anxiety when speaking English in class,
including studying more active, calming down or relaxing, being more confident,
and choosing silence.
