ABSTRACT
Fadila Afrisya 2023. “An Analysis of Students’ Speaking Anxiety at The Second
Grade of SMPN 4 Palopo. (A Qualitative Research)”. A thesis of
English Language Education Study Program of Tarbiyah and Teacher
Training Faculty State Islamic Institute IAIN) of Palopo. Supervised by
Magfirah Thayyib as the first consultant and Ermawati as the second
consultant.
The objective of this research to find out the factors that causing students anxiety
in speaking English and the types of students’ anxiety in speaking English at the
second grade students’ of SMP Negeri 4 Palopo. This research used descriptive-
qualitative method and applied purposive sampling respondents consisted of 32
students who experienced anxiety in 8A class of SMP Negeri 4 Palopo. The data
gathered through observation checklist, open-ended questionnaire, and interview.
The results of this research showed that there are 4 factors that causing students’
anxiety in speaking English. The most factor that domina is fear of making
mistakes, following by lack of vocabulary, lack of confidence and classmates. And
researcher also find out 3 types of anxiety that the students experiencing in their
speaking anxiety, the most type is communication apprehension, following by test
anxiety and fear of negative evaluation.
