Abstract

FETY FITRANA, 2024. “Fear of Missing Out dalam Perspektif Interaksionisme
Simbolik George Herbert Mead (Studi Kasus pada Remaja di Desa
Baku-Baku Kabupaten Luwu Utara)”. Skripsi Program Studi
Komunikasi Dan Penyiaran Islam Fakultas Ushuluddin, Adab, dan
Dakwah Institut Agama Islam Negeri Palopo, Dibimbing oleh Aswan
dan Fajrul Ilmy Darussalam.
Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui faktor dan gejala fear of missing out (FoMO)
yang dialami remaja dan gejala (FoMO) dalam perspektif interaksionisme simbolik
George Herbert Mead. Menggunakan metode kualitatif, penelitian ini mengambil
data dari lima informan yang diwawancarai secara mendalam. Hasilnya
menunjukkan bahwa, faktor munculnya FoMO pada remaja Desa Baku-Baku
dipengaruhi oleh: penggunaan media sosial yang berlebihan, pengaruh dari
lingkungan sekitar, dan kebiasaan harian remaja. Gejala yang dialami yaitu: tidak
bisa lepas dari media sosial, selalu mengikuti trend, dan selalu ingin diakui.
Berdasarkan perspektif interaksionisme simbolik George Herbert Mead, pikiran
remaja tercermin pada intensitas penggunaan media sosial sebagai tempat untuk
menciptakan representasi simbolik tentang siapa dirinya dan bagaimana dirinya
ingin dilihat oleh orang lain melalui unggahannya. Diri remaja terbentuk melalui
interaksi sosial, yaitu berdasarkan tanggapan serta penerimaan dari teman-teman
yang membentuk identitas dan nilai diri pada remaja terutama dalam dunia virtual.
Masyarakat memengaruhi konsep diri remaja melalui interaksi sosial, dalam hal ini
media sosial menjadi medan utama bagi remaja untuk terlibat dalam proses
sosialisasi dan memenuhi ekspektasi masyarakat.

Adolescents in Baku-Baku Village, North Luwu Regency)".
Thesis of the Islamic Communication and Broadcasting Study
Program, Faculty of Ushuluddin, Adab, and Da'wah, Palopo
State Islamic Institute was supervised by Aswan and Fajrul Ilmy
Darussalam.
This research aims to determine the factors and symptoms of fear of missing out
(FoMO) experienced by adolescents and symptoms (FoMO) from the perspective
of George Herbert Mead's symbolic interactionism. Using qualitative methods, this
research took data from five informants who were interviewed in depth. The results
show that the factors for the emergence of FoMO in Baku-Baku Village teenagers
are influenced by: excessive use of social media, influences from the surrounding
environment, and teenagers' daily habits. The symptoms experienced are: can't get
away from social media, always follows trends, and always wants to be recognized.
Based on George Herbert Mead's perspective of symbolic interactionism, teenagers'
thoughts are reflected in the intensity of using social media as a place to create
symbolic representations of who they are and how they want to be seen by others
through their uploads. The adolescent self is formed through social interaction,
namely based on responses and acceptance from friends which shape the identity
and self-value of adolescents, especially in the virtual world. Society influences
teenagers' self-concept through social interactions, in this case social media is the
main field for teenagers to be involved in the socialization process and fulfill
society's expectations.
