Spelling Bee to Increase Students’ Vocabulary Mastery in The Second
Grade of Junior High School 1 Palopo” A thesis of the English

This Thesis is research on the effectiveness of using multimedia spelling bees to
increase students’ vocabulary mastery in the second grade of junior high school 1
palopo. The research question: Is the use of multimedia spelling bee effective to
increase students’ vocabulary mastery in the second grade of Junior High School
1 Palopo? This research aims to determine whether or not the use of multimedia
spelling bee games can increase students’ vocabulary mastery. The method used
in this research is pre-experimental. Conducted this research on students at Junior
High School 1 Palopo, located in Palopo City. The researcher researched on 23
September 2022 - 21 October 2022. The research population was students of
second grade Junior High School 1 Palopo. The researcher chose 30 students of
class VIII A as the research sample. The research instrument was in the form of a
vocabulary test, where the test was in the form of questions on compiling
vocabulary based on the correct group (nouns, verbs, and adjectives). The total
vocabulary is 30 words. The researcher gave the students pre-test and post-test.
The data were analyzed descriptively statistically, and calculated by using SPSS
25. The data were analyzed by calculating the mean score and paired sample t-
test. the result revealed that the students’ mean score on post-test (96.77) was
higher than the pre-test (90.07). The tcount (3.370) was higher than the ttable (1.699).
It means that the alternative hypothesis H1 was accepted and the null hypothesis
H0 was rejected. The researcher concluded that the use of multimedia spelling bee
is effective to increase students’ vocabulary mastery in the second grade of Junior
High School 1 Palopo.
