Abstract

the Eighth Grade of Junior High School 8 Palopo, A Thesis of
English Language Education study program of Tarbiyah and Teacher
Training Faculty of State Islamic Institute of Palopo, Consultant (1)
Husnaini (2) Yuyun Ruqiyyat Said.
The researcher focused on the use of Word Square Media to enhance students’
vocabulary at the eighth grade of SMPN 8 Palopo. This research used Classroom
Action Research (CAR). The subject of the research was VIII.7 grade and the total of
them was 24. The research procedure used two cycle, cycle I and cycle II, and every
cycle had fourth steps, namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. This
procedure was used by Kurd Lewin teori. The observation was analyzed qualitatively
and the test was analyzed quantitatively. In cycle I the students mean score pre-test
was 28% and post-test was 80%, while mean score of post-test cycle II was 93,3. It
can be concluded that the word square media enhancing the students’ ability in
vocabulary students learning outcomes. There are several ways in teaching
vocabulary by using word square media were, in cycle I: (1) The researcher gave
instruction to students how to play a word square media (2) The researcher gave the
word square sheets in each students (3) After the students complete the word square
media, researcher asked representatives from each students to describe the results as
to whether they are right or wrong (4) Researcher concluded the material. In cycle II:
(1) The researcher forms the students in groups, each groups consisted of five or six
students (2) The researcher gave instruction to students how to play word square in
groips (3) And then, the researcher gave instruction to the all of the groups to finish
the word square sheet (4) After the media word square completed by the each groups,
reseracher asked representative from each group to describe the results as to whether
they are right or wrong (5) The researcher concluded the material.
