Elvirah, 2022. “Students’ English Generic Structure Mastery at Junior High
School Number 5 Palopo: An Analysis of Descriptive Text”. Thesis,
English Language Education Study Program Tarbiyah and Teacher
Training Faculty State Islamic Institute of Palopo, supervised by
Masruddin and Madehang.
This thesis deals with an analysis of students’ descriptive text mastery on generic
structure at junior high school number 5 palopo. Based on the explanation in the
background, the problem statement is how students’ descriptive text mastery on
generic structure (identification and description) at junior high school number 5
Palopo. The specific objectives of this research are to analyze the generic structure
of students’ in the descriptive text at junior high school number 5 Palopo, which is
relevant to the research questions mentioned above. This research used a
descriptive qualitative method. The population of this research was is students of
junior high school number 5 Palopo in the academic year 2021/2022 class VIII
(A, B, C, and D). The total number of students in class VIII is 120 students. In this
study, researchers used random sampling, with a lottery of the name of the class to
be studied. The results of the lottery that was chosen was class VIII C The
researcher focused on class VIII C, which consisted of 23 students. This research
used data collection techniques in the form of documentation. This result showed
that the students can write descriptive text based on its generic structure, namely
identification, and description, but they still have difficulty in developing what
they write, the descriptive text produced by students is very short. Lack of
vocabulary and students' understanding of descriptive texts greatly affects the
results of descriptive texts made by students. They find it difficult to develop and
organize their ideas when writing, so they only write what they think and do not
develop their writing.
