Abstract
A. Besse Ashel, 2024, "The Effectiveness of Pair Work Technique through
News-Based Materials in Improving Students’ Speaking
Skill at the Eleventh Grade of SMAN 7 Luwu." A Thesis of
the English Department of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training
Faculty for the State Islamic Institut (IAIN) Palopo.
Supervised by consultant (I) Wahibah, S.Ag., M.Hum, and
Consultant (II) St. Hartina, S. Pd., M.Pd.
This research aimed to determine the effectiveness of pair work technique through
news-based material in improving students' speaking skill in the eleventh grade of
SMAN 7 Luwu. The objectives of the research are : 1.) To examine whether or not
implementing pair work technique through News-Based materials was effective in
improving students' Speaking skill at the eleventh grade of SMAN 7 Luwu. 2.) To
find out the students’ perceptions toward the use of pair work technique through
news-based materials. A mixed method with a qualitative and quantitative was used
in this research. This research applied one group's pre-test and post-test design. The
population of this study consisted of 210 students in seventh classes for the eleventh
grade of SMAN 7 Luwu. The sample consisted of 22 students and was taken using
a purposive sampling technique. In contrast, the research instrument used was a
speaking test. The data were analyzed using a Paired Sample T-test and calculated
using SPSS 22. The data were analyzed by calculating the mean score and paired
sample t-test. The result of this research are showed that the mean score on Post�Test (58.59) was higher than the Pre-Test (38.59). The data analysis value, tcount
(12.710), while the Ttable. For the standard of significance level, 0,05 (5%) on df
(degree of freedom) value 21 was 2.080, which means the data stated that the value
of tcount is higher than that of Ttable. Students' perceptions of the pair work techniques
have a positive impact in improving speaking skill, increasing self-confidence and
understanding English material. On the other hand, the alternative hypothesis (H1)
was accepted, and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It can be concluded that
applying the pair work technique through news-based materials is effective and can
be recommended to improve students' speaking skill.
