confidence in Speaking at SMPN 7 palopo”. A thesis
of English Language Education Study Program
Education and Teacher Training Faculty of State
Islamic of Palopo. Supervised by the first Consultant,
Dr. Wisran S.S., M.Pd, and the Second consultant
Husnaini S.Pd.I., M.Pd.
This research attempted to determine the effect of games on students’ self-
confidence in speaking at SMPN 7 Palopo. The problem statement of this
research is; “Does the use of games improve students’ confidence in speaking at
SMPN 7 Palopo?” Based on the description above, the research objective was to
determine how using games improves students’ self-confidence in speaking at
SMPN 7 Palopo. This thesis applied a qualitative research method. The data
collection techniques were questionnaires and observation. The population of this
research was the eighth-grade students at SMPN 7 Palopo. There were 28
students as the sample. The result of this research showed that the mean score of
students after treatment was 64.32, which is higher than before treatment, at
58.43. Then, it was proved that using games in teaching speaking improves
students’ self-confidence in speaking.
