The purpose of this study was to improve students' writing skills in writing
descriptive texts through watching videos at SMP Negeri 8 Palopo. The research
question is, can the use of video improve students' skills in writing descriptive texts
at SMP Negeri 8 Palopo? This study used a pre-experimental method with a pre-test
and post-test design. The population in this study were class VIII students of SMP
Negeri 8 Palopo, totaling 212 students. Data was collected through a writing test (to
determine students' writing ability). The researcher gave pre-test and post-test to
students. The data were analyzed using SPSS 20 to analyze the data, the researcher
determined the assessment classification which included content, organization,
vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. The results of this report show the average
scores of students' pre-test and post-test. In the pre-test the average student score
was 40.80 and in the post-test the student's average score was 79.92. From the results
of the analysis, the researcher concluded that there was a significant difference
between the pretest and posttest in improving students' writing skills using the
random sample method. That the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted and the null
hypothesis (H0) is rejected. This means that the use of video media in descriptive text
can improve student achievement.
