Abstract

Abstract
Integrating local culture into languange material leads to improving the student’s reading skills. This research
focuses on developing reading materials based on the local culture of Luwu, South Sulawesi. This research and
development applied the ADDIE model. The subjects of the research were five English teachers in Luwu
Regency and 25 students of class VIII of SMP Negeri 4 Belopa. In the analysis step, the teachers were
interviewed and the students were given a questionnaire. The need analysis showed that 92% of the students
and 100% of the teachers need reading material based on Luwu local culture. In design step, the selection of
the reading texts was conducted based on the result of the need analysis. In development step, the initial draft
of the book was completed. The book consisted of four chapters, namely (1) Heroes of Luwu, (2) Folklores of
Luwu (3) Enchantment of Luwu Tourism Objects (4) Traditional Foods of Luwu. The material and language
aspects were judged by the experts with means score of 83,75 (good). The initial draft was revised according
to the experts’ comments. In the implementation step, the revised product was used in the English class at SMP
Negeri 4 Belopa. The average teacher’s assessment on the use of the reading materials book was 3,64 (agree)
and the students’ response was 3,96 ( strongly agree) of 4 scale. The reading materials book was practical to
be used in learning. In the evaluation step, the revised book was refined according to the teacher’s assessment
and the students’ responses. The final draft was disseminated to several junior high schools in Luwu Regency.
