Salwa Dwiyanti, 2024. “Improving Students’ Reading Comprehension by Using
Textbook: Think Globally Act Locally at the 9th Grade of SMP Negeri 8
Palopo”. Thesis, English Language Education Study Program Education
and Teacher Training Faculty State Islamic Institute of Palopo. Supervised
by: Amali Yahya and Devi Ismayanti.
This research aims to determine and improve students' reading comprehension by
focusing on narrative texts in textbooks at SMP Negeri 8 Palopo. This research is
pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test. The population of
this research is class IX students of SMP Negeri 8 Palopo in the 2024/2025
academic year. The total population is 175 students. The sample is class IX.3,
totalling 25 students as an experimental class. Researchers applied purposive
sampling. The instrument of this research is a reading test. The researcher used a
multiple-choice test consisting of 20 narrative text questions. Research findings
shows that learning to read can improve students' reading comprehension in
narrative texts. This is proven by the average pre-test score of 56.80 (fair), which is
considered adequate, post-test of 84.00 (good), which is considered good and has
increased. The results of this research found that this method was effectively used
in the reading comprehension of students in the ninth grade of SMP Negeri 8
Palopo. The results of this increase are also proven by the t test value. Researchers
found the t-count value (9.819) was higher than the t-table value (2.064). This value
means there is a significant difference between the students' pre-test and post-test
results. It was concluded that the use of teaching reading textbooks can improve
students' reading comprehension.
