This research aims to determine whether the Two Stay Two Stray strategy
improves the students speaking in the second grade of SMAN 2 Luwu Timur. The
study used a pre-experimental design as the research methodology in the form of a
one-group pretest-posttest design with a quantitative approach. The population of
this research was the second grade of SMA Negeri 2 Luwu Timur. The total
population was 16 students and consisted of one class. This research took one
class as a sample which was class IPA IV. It consisted of 16 students. There were
8 boys and 8 girls. They had the same level. The research instrument was the test
include pre-test and post-test. The test would give through a pre-test and post-test.
The pre-test was used to know the level of students speaking activeness before the
treatment. At the same time, the post-test was used to measure the students
speaking skills after two stay two stray treatments. The procedure of collecting
data included pre-test, treatment, and post-test. Instrument of collecting data were
observation and test. Technique of analysing data were scoring with speaking
rubric, classifying student''s score, calculating student''s score, and looking for
mean score and standard deviation with using SPSS 20. Based on the research
conducted, the researcher did her research in teaching speaking by two stay two
stray method with dialogue. In the pre-test, the students'' mean score is 39,88, and
the student''s score in the post-test is 61,05. The data were analysed using SPSS. It
found that the standard of signification was 5%, degree of freedom (df) 17, tt
2.042 and standard of signification 0,05. The result of t0 (tcount) was 12,756. The
researcher gave the interpretation that t0 (tcount) was higher than tt (ttable), 12,
756 2. 042. Besides that, some of the students'' pre-test still used Indonesian to
speak or say something, whereas in the post-test. The students can speak English
using English although they still read the text, they can speak fluently. Using two
stay two stray method effectively teaches English, especially speaking. Learning
speaking with two stay two stray method was an effective and interesting way to
be applied in the classroom. Besides, peer groups could motivate the students
were expected to contribute ideas, information, opinion and feelings to others.
