Abstract

FATIMA, 2024. " Increasing Students’ Vocabulary Through Word Sort Strategy at
The Students of SMPN 2 Satap Sabbang". A thesis of The English
Departement Study Program of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training Faculty
State Islamic Institute of Palopo. Supervised by: Amalia Yahya and
Yuyun Ruqiyyat Said.
This research is about increasing students vocabulary through word sort strategy
at the students of SMPN 2 Satap Sabbang, this study aimed to find out whether or
not word sort strategy is effective in increasing vocabulary at the seventh grade
students of SMPN 2 Satap Sabbang. The population of this research is class VII
students at SMPN 2 Satap Sabbang in the 2023 academic year. The number of
population was 55 students and the sample consisted of 28 students. The
researcher administered pre-tests and post-tests. According to research findings at
SMPN 2 Satap Sabbang, the implementation of the word sort strategy resulted in a
significant improvement in students' vocabulary mastery. Word sorts,
characterized by small group categorization and classification activities, proved
instrumental in activating students' prior knowledge and fostering collaborative
learning. The pretest results highlighted a deficiency in vocabulary proficiency
among seventh-grade students, with the majority falling into the fairly poor
category. However, final revealed a marked enhancement, with students achieving
an average score indicating good proficiency. Notably, the distribution of post-test
results showcased a positive shift, with a notable number of students reaching
very good levels of proficiency. This improvement underscores the efficacy of the
word sort strategy in bolstering students' language acquisition, attributed to their
active engagement and consistent exposure to vocabulary reinforcement activities.
